Environmental Law Center (ELC)
The Environmental Law Center has its roots in the Environmental Law Counseling Center of the Korean Anti-Pollution Movement Association established in 1991 and evolved as a Legal Advice Office in 1993. In 1997, the office developed into an independent Environmental Law Committee after becoming an affiliated organization of the KFEM on February 21, 2000.
The center was one of the first environmental groups in Korea to have a full-time lawyer as a staff member, with more than 100 lawyers working as directors or members of the steering committee.
These members won a series of environmental lawsuits, including cases ordered to stop the national Saemangeum project, along with Nakdong River construction plans, which were part of the 2011 Four Major Rivers Project. Some winning cases also included the 2012 and 2014 humidifier disinfectant incidents, in which a court ordered financial compensation for damages.
